Geoff’s First Word for January 2018

New Year – New Starts

Welcome to the first issue of 2018. A lot of people are still away and golf is in a bit of a hiatus at the moment, however, we hope you had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.

What is happening though is the re-emergence of Tiger Woods and Michael Campbell. When Woods played through his limited field tournament at the Hero WorldChallenge a few weeks ago he climbed the leader board on the Sunday final day with a final-round 68. On the following day (Monday), he made an even bigger jump in the Official World Golf Ranking.

By finishing T-9 in the Hero World event in the Bahamas, Woods moved up 531 spots. The 14-time major champ is now ranked No. 668 after entering the week at No. 1,199. It’s a similar position to where Woods finished 2016 (No. 652) in the OWGR.

The big issue for us was his strength and demeanour during the final day. It’s as if his match play fitness is beginning to return! Time will tell here, but good luck to him. He certainly was a positive force in the golf economy, still is and without challenge.

Michael Campbell, however, is a completely different story. After 4 years working in Spain in his Golf Academy, he is now stating he is going have a crack at the Seniors Tour once he turns 50 shortly. Already some commentators are scoffing at this. The NZ Herald was leading the charge in this, but they do have a point.

Golf at the highest levels is all about attitude. Some have it all the time. Some do not. Again, time will tell.

2017 saw the dominance of Social Media in certain areas. In particular the “angry” and “insulted” groups. I think that 2018 will see a start in the sorting out and rebalancing in this medium. The digital movement is growing and our interfaces are developing all the time. We launched our first digital magazine over 5 years ago!

So, watch these pages over the next few months as we continue to lead the way in the New Zealand Golf, Leisure and Lifestyle market.
