Geoff’s first word for September 2017

History is going to be made this month in Auckland.

The LPGA is for the very first time coming to Windross Farm, the newly developed course by Ardmore Airport at the end of September.

Apart from our very own Lydia Ko, we have super stars arriving with eight Major winners, including three from last month’s winning USA Solheim Cup team, that have completed final confirmation for this month’s New Zealand Women’s Open.

The trio of Paula Creamer, Brittany Lincicome and young gun Danielle Kang were part of the winning American Solheim Cup team. The other Major winners comprise Canada’s Brooke Henderson, Korea’s Na Yeon Choi, Taiwan’s Yani Tseng, Scotland’s Catriona Matthew and of course Lydia Ko.

These eight players, have 14 Major wins and more than NZ$88 million in prizemoney between them, are in the final confirmed 90 LPGA players to contest the NZ$1.85 million event from 28 September to 1 October.

There is a final field of 132 players comprising the 90 confirmed players from the LPGA with a further 40 players to be confirmed with 15 to come from the Australian Ladies Professional Golf, 10 from New Zealand Golf and 17 Sponsor invites.

So, these stars are a must watch.  I have heard that tickets are rapidly being snapped up so get to their web site for lots of information.  It is a very good web site! www.nzwomensopen.com

Whilst we are on the subject of golf events it was with great delight to see the announcement of the 2018 PGA Championship.  It will be held, again, at Manawatu Golf Club late February the week before the Men’s Open in Queenstown so the field should be very strong indeed. Congratulations to the Board of Manawatu Golf Club for having the will and fortitude to take this on again.

Also, inside the September issue is a very informative and thoughtful piece about the process of golf rules reform.  Dean Murphy CEO of NZ Golf Inc. went to the USA a few weeks ago to attend one of the many worldwide meetings and as a result gave us his thoughts and opinions as to progress in this very important subject.
