REGULAR 34 | NZ Golf Magazine | July 2019 InterviewwithaNewZealandsportspersonality 13 Who would you get the most satisfaction out of beating on a golf course? Anyone who Doug Milne and I play against on a Friday. Competition is fierce between the “geriatric pros” and “honorary pros” (the baker and the tennis pro) on a Friday. 14 Of all the courses you have played or walked around the world, which one is your favourite and why? There are two courses I would happily play every day. They are The Golf Club, New Albany, Ohio USA - one of Pete Dye’s early designs and Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club, my favourite NZ course. 15 If you hadn’t been a golf professional what would you have done? I would have been a commercial pilot. I had a private pilot’s license for quite a few years. 16 What has been the biggest change in golf? A combination of the following (but, note, with all of these changes, the average handicap has not changed!): 1. Equipment and balls. 2. Improved course condition 3. The touring professionals are now athletes and not just top golfers. 17 What is your favourite destination to visit and why? My favourite is TPC Sawgrass with lunch on the balcony with our family. 18 What would you serve at your “Champion’s Dinner”? I would definitely serve a meal of roast lamb, roast potatoes, peas and mint sauce. Of course there would be apple crumble for dessert.
